About Our CSA

Community Supported Agriculture

For the last 40 years, community supported agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal, organic foods from farmers in their own region in the USA.  Joining a CSA is a great way to get the freshest and healthiest foods for your family as well as support local organic farmers.

The Barn owns and operates an urban farm and we go a step further by partnering with other local organic farmers in the area so we can bring our clients a greater selection of produce, all-natural Angus beef, free range poultry, and free range eggs. Here is how it works:

  • We offer shares of ours (and our partners’) harvests to the public.
  • Customers sign up to receive a ‘share’ of food every week
  • We have your box of fresh produce available for you to pick up at our urban farm and garden store every week on Friday and Saturday during store hours.

Customers can enjoy access to these delicious and healthy foods for as long as they like.  If they ever want to cancel or put deliveries on hold the can do so easily.  Here are just some of the advantages to our CSA:

For Farmers:

  • Ability to easily market their food off season when they have the most time available to do so.
  • Receive steady and regular payments for their food which helps their cash flow.
  • They get to know the people that are purchasing their food.

For Consumers:

  • Get to eat locally grown, ultra-fresh organic foods that are high in nutritional value.
  • Get exposure to different types of vegetables and add variety to their meals.
  • Can visit our urban farm where some of the food is grown.
  • Children usually like foods from “their farm” which they normally would not eat.
  • Get to learn where their food came from and know the person that grows it.
  • Reduce the risk of getting contaminated foods from commercial farms in other states or countries.
  • Your membership helps keep our family farms contributing to a vibrant local economy.
  • Save shopping time because your produce is already gathered and ready to pick-up.
  • Feel a closer connection to nature as you see the progression of the seasons in your Harvest Boxes
  • Because we have a walk-in cooler and a retail establishment you can pick up your food on a weekday (Friday) or Saturday. This makes it much more convenient for our CSA participants

ADDED BENEFITS ONLY AVAILABLE TO THE BARN CSA MEMBERS

  • We at The Barn will endeavor to make tasty recipes available to our members to make their meals more enjoyable.
  • We will work to provide your basket no matter what the weather might be through the use of hoop houses and other methods. If for some reason we can’t supply an adequate amount of local food during inclement weather we will notify you well in advance of pick-up days.
  • We will periodically have cooking classes as well as preserving classes available for our members either for free or for a small investment.
  • All of our food will be grown naturally using organic methods in North Texas. At least 80 % is grown in a 40 mile radius of our Fort Worth shop at 2825 8th Ave. Free range chickens and eggs, grass fed beef and can be pre-ordered and added to your order for pick-up. If we find an occasional treat that is grown farther away than this you will be notified as to where it came from. This is our way of reducing our carbon footprint and being more environmentally friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many people will this harvest box feed?

This is by far the most common question we get.  We have found that the amount of produce a household consumes varies greatly. This depends on how often people eat out or entertain, whether people are vegetarians, vegans, or omnivores, and whether they are going to supplement their diets with things like bananas, oranges, avocados and other things that don’t grow in the Fort Worth area.

2. Will your box supply all the produce needs of my family?

Probably not if your household has 4 people who eat as many fruits and vegetables as current dietary recommendations (half your plate should be vegetables and fruits). If your goal is to eat that much produce, you should expect to supplement what is in your weekly box. Many families will find that the box suits their needs. Others will love our box, but desire more greens and fruit than we provide, so they may purchase additional local produce at our farmers collaborative market, or they may supplement with bananas, oranges, grapefruit and other non-local produce from the store, (if desired we will endeavor to get some of these goods from organic farmers in south Texas).

3. Is there a way to get extra quantities of berries, tomatoes, peppers, basil, etc. to preserve for the winter?

Yes, you can ask to be notified when we have specials on bulk quantities. As mentioned, we will periodically give classes on preserving food for our members.

4. How much does our CSA/Co-op cost?

There are three great choices available:

  1. Small for $35.00
  2. Medium for $45.00
  3. Large for $65.00

We have done this so that you can better budget your investment versus paying for several weeks worth at once.

5. When will the food be available for pick-up?

Food will be available on Fridays 12pm to 05pm and Saturdays 09am to 05pm every week.
